Rainbow Applique T-shirt

So in the midst of all the party preparations Susannah asks me what kind of outfit I’m going to make her for her birthday.  I had zero plans to make her something to wear, but I couldn’t say no to her big brown eyes.  I didn’t have time for anything elaborate so I settled on a rainbow applique t-shirt.  I doubt I will get a skirt made in time, but at least she’ll have something cute to wear at her party.

Surprise, surprise, I had all the scraps I needed (yay for using up scraps!) on hand already.  My first thought was to cut out the individual stripes of the rainbow and attach them to Heat & Bond, but it was much easier to just cut out a general rainbow shape from each color in graduating sizes and sew on top of each layer (using Heat & Bond on each layer).   It needed a little something to finish it up so I added a soft, minky cloud.

Susannah likes it, it only took me about twenty minutes, and now I can concentrate on everything else on my to-do list.

Travel Jewelry Organizer

jewelry organizer 5

This jewelry organizer has been on my Pinterest to-do list for-EV-er, so I finally broke down and made one to haul my jewelry on my upcoming trip.  You can find the tutorial here.

It really wasn’t a hard project at all, and I completely skipped the ring holder since I usually only wear my wedding rings.  The earring holder is cool, but I wasn’t sure how well my dangle earring would stay put.  I tried a few different things and and as long as I thread the posts through both holes I think they’ll stay put just fine.

I don’t have a snap setter so I hand-sewed a snap on (makes it much easier to attach/detach earrings), then added a little flower to cover up the ugly side of the snap.

I wish I would have taken the pattern size into consideration before making this, because most of my necklaces are the wire & bead can’t-be-bent variety and definitely will NOT fit in this case.  I think I can come up with something separate on my own for those, though.  (Ha! Wish me luck on that.)

I don’t know why that last photo makes it look so oddly shaped.  It isn’t like that in person.  Whatev.

Springtime Mini Pallet Art with Mod Podge Rocks Stencils

A few months ago, Amy, who blogs over at Mod Podge Rocks released  an awesome new product – repositionable stencils that are especially designed to work with Mod Podge and glitter.  They’re two of my favorite products in the whole world, so I was thrilled when she offered to send one of her new stencils to me to try out.  I did a little happy dance when it arrived in the mail along with some glitter and spouncers…and then promptly forgot about it in the midst of all of the Despicable Me party preparations.  Luckily, I’m not in denial about my procrastinating ways, and I committed myself to the latest possible date.  I’m just cool like that.  (Seriously, my single resolution for 2015 needs to be END PROCRASTINATION.  Notice how I pushed it off until 2015?)

But back to the stencils.  These bad boys are pretty cool.  They’re repositionable, washable, and can be used over and over.  They can be used with Mod Podge and glitter or paint, and they’re affordable and easy to find (Michaels).  And look at all the cool designs:

I needed some spring decor so I decided to make another mini pallet art project, similar to this one I made for Valentines Day (because, really, it’s time to take down the Valentine decor, right?).

I used wood shims again, but found some that were even smaller, so the finished size is only about 6×6.

After painting it I added some birds and the word “happy” to the corner using a homemade stencil from contact paper.  It didn’t stick to the wood very well so I probably would have been better off free-handing the designs.

After the paint was totally dry I lined the stencil up and went to town with the Mod Podge.  After coating the entire surface I peeled the stencil up and sprinkled glitter on the design, then washed the stencil off and repositioned it to continue over the entire surface, skipping the area around the birds.

After everything was dry I used a small paintbrush to remove the excess glitter.

In retrospect, using the light glitter didn’t really produce the results I was hoping for.  If I did it over I would use a bolder shade of glitter or maybe paint, but it’s still a happy little piece.

And hey, at least it isn’t Valentine themed.  Progress.

Spring Wreath

Spring is definitely here in Dallas.  Forty degrees one day, eighty the next.  I’m okay with it because the alternative is 100, 100, 100, 105, 100…

Plus, spring in Texas is pretty, which is a nice change from the awful muddiness of Alaska.   Spring in Fairbanks is one of the few things I don’t miss about living there.

My winter wreath is looking pretty sad these days.  I guess I’m going to have to do something different next year because I think it’s seen its last season on our front door.  I’m not actually even a huge wreath person, but sadly, my door is still damaged from the time we had to break in after locking ourselves out, so it needs something to distract from the ugly.  (Don’t ask….it’s not a happy story.)

A quick trip to Michael’s and half an hour putting it together and my spring wreath was ready to replace the well-loved specimen on my door.  (I’ve gotten so many compliments from strangers on that wreath that I’m sad to see it go…someone even suggested I sell them at a farmers market or something.  If she only knew how easy and inexpensive it was to put together!)

I intended to go with more of a green theme, but couldn’t find green hydrangeas that I liked so I went with white instead.  Not quite what i wanted, but I still like it pretty well.

P.S. Please ignore the scratches on my door.  I obviously need to break down and re-paint.

Sewing Chair Makeover

I found a hideously ugly chair a few months ago at a thrift store for just a couple dollars and the weather finally cooperated long enough to get it re-finished.  I intend to use it at my sewing desk, and it looks so much prettier now.   Pretty makes me happy.  🙂

It wasn’t as hard as I was expecting, just took a little sanding and wood filler, then paint and some fabric to recover the cushion.  The hardest part was pulling the staples out to remove the old vinyl covering…and the ugly gold fabric beneath that layer.

It only took about half a yard of fabric to recover the seat, so for less than $5 I was able to give the chair a whole new look.  Well worth it, in my opinion.  🙂

DIY Minion Shirts

Madeline’s Despicable Me themed party is Saturday, so everything in our lives are being minion-ized these days.  I think the minions are cute, but Gru is by far my favorite character from the movies, so I’m ready to move past the minions already.  😉

Mad, on the other hand, is thrilled with all the minion stuff.  I just keep chanting to myself, “three more days….three more days…”

Sick of minions or not, I thought the t-shirts turned out pretty well and the girls are dying to pick their favorites and wear them, so it looks like I’ll be seeing minions for some time to come.

These bad boys were pretty simple to put together.  The eyes and goggles are felt.  I attached them with fusible webbing and then stitched around the edges.  For the hair and mouth I used DecoArt’s SoSoft fabric paint, which was really easy to apply with a thin paintbrush.

Hopefully the kids will approve.

I have a few more minion-ish things I need to work on, but I’ll be sure to share all about the party next week.

Tree of Hearts

021

I guess I’m obsessed with hearts right now, because everything I sit down to do turns into a love-fest.

I pulled out one of my many blank canvases, a heart punch, and paper scraps and made a tree entirely of hearts.  Well, other than the trunk.

The edges of the canvas need something, but I haven’t figure out what yet.
