Day 22: Books for Girls

We’re partial to girl books around here.  Poor Jerm is totally outnumbered and he doesn’t have much time to read these days, anyway.  Here are a few that make the list of favorite girly books:

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Well duh.  What kind of list of girl list would this be if Little Women wasn’t on it?

Eight Cousins/Rose in Bloom, also by Louisa May Alcott

My personal favorites of Louisa May Alcott.

Calico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare

Although The Witch of Blackbird Pond is my favorite book of Elizabeth George Speare’s, I liked Calico Captive enough to read it five or six times growing up.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

This is another book my mom read aloud to me (and my siblings) so it’s kind of a nostalgic pick, but it’s a fascinating story, too.

The Nancy Drew series (the original books) by Carolyn Keene

Although I read the newer books too, it’s the old books that I want my girls to read in a few years.  Loved them and desperately wish I had kept the copies from my childhood.

Do you have any favorite girls books?  I’m always on the lookout for read-alouds!

  1. I still have my childhood copy of “Little Women”. I need to read the other 2 you mentioned by Alcott. Just re-read the “Island of the Blue Dolphins” and was glad it was based on a true story. 🙂 That always makes me happy. I have the follow-up book “Zia” that I haven’t gotten very far with. (yard sale treasures) I will have to watch for “Calico Captive”. I forgot about that one.
