Day 5: the one that revolutionized our lives

Truth: My husband is frugal by nature.
Truth: I’m not.

The year before we got married Jerm saved something like $10,000 to put towards a down payment on a house.
I saved….um, nothing. (Although most of my money went towards the wedding.  And I wasn’t working full-time for a good portion of the year.  But still.)

Thankfully, we were both pretty much on the same page about spending and debt when we got married so we’ve never had any huge issues to work through or anything.  Even so, although we were always comfortable, we weren’t paying our debt off as quickly as we (okay, mostly Jerm) would have liked.

And then we read The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.  Suddenly angels were singing and confetti was falling and stuff.

No, seriously.

I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter how well they handle their finances.

Using his monthly budget and cash-only plan has enabled us to have the payoff of our mortgage close enough to touch (February!) in under ten years.

I also adore the cash-only system.  I thought it would be restrictive, but it ended up being the exact opposite.

Anyway, I’ll spare you any more of my raving.  Just get the book and check it out for yourself.

You can see the rest of the series here.

  1. My daughter just got engaged this past weekend and I told them they had to read this book first. She actually attended FPU a couple of years ago with us. Then our pastor recommended three books, and this was one of them!
