So, I kind of struggled with this one. I mean, Pat McManus. On the one hand, he’s kind of a genius, but it’s also a little embarrassing to admit that one of his books made my list.
While a lot of his stories are pretty great, there’s only one that I can remember as being truly excellent: “The Two-Wheeled ATV”, from A Fine and Pleasant Misery.
This story is legendary in my family, so I don’t know if it’s realllly as hilarious as I claim or if it’s more of a sentimental thing, but either way it’s my all-time favorite short story. I can’t wait until my girls are old enough to understand the humor so I can read it to them.
Oh, the memories.
The timber wolves, the traitorous bike chain, the local fiend, the tricycle handlebars.
The uncontrollable, rolling-on-the-floor-gasping-for-air, tears-streaming-down-your-beet-red-face kind of laughter. You’ll just have to take my word for it. Or even better, read it for yourself.
I’m giggling just thinking about it.
Because sometimes you just need to laugh.
