DIY Toy Car Caddy

Car Caddy 2

Last year when I was making the bazillion and twelve crayon rolls for my bazillion and twelve nieces, I kept thinking that with a few modifications they could easily become cute little caddys (caddies?) for lots of other things – the tiny Strawberry Shortcake dolls my girls carry around, or glitter, scissors, and other crafting essentials that I always end up toting to grandma’s and Heather’s when we travel.  But the one that stuck with me all year was to modify it into a car caddy for little boys, so I decided to go for it and here’s what I came up with.

Toy Car Caddy

Supplies:

  • (2) 10″x17″ cuts of sturdy fabric (I planned on using canvas but substituted fleece and it worked out fine)
  • (1)  6″x17″ cut of sturdy fabric
  • (1) 17″x3″ cut of black felt
  • Small piece of yellow felt
  • 6-8″ of belting or ribbon (belting will be more durable)
  • Small piece of velcro

First, take your 17″x6″ piece of fabric and fold it in half.  Iron it, then line up the raw edges with the bottom of your inside piece of fabric.  Sew along the raw edges.

Pin the folded fabric at every 2.75″ to create your car pockets.

Stitch vertical lines through all the layers of fabric, being sure to back-stitch at the top and bottom, then stitch again to reinforce.

Hot glue and/or sew the road to the top of the inside panel, then hot glue small yellow pieces of felt for the road dashes.  (You could sew them, but it’s easier to glue.)

Take your other piece of 17″x10″ fabric and center your belting on the bottom half of the fabric (see photo).  Stitch to edge of fabric, going over several times to reinforce.

Add one side of the velcro the belting and the other side to the center of the fabric, lining it up with the belting (you may want to do a better job of this than I did….).

Pin your two pieces of fabric together, with right sides facing each other.  Sew all the way around the fabric, leaving a 3-4″ gap for turning.

Turn inside out, then stitch the opening closed and iron flat.

To close, just fold top half over the car pockets, then secure with velcro.

I like it.  If only I had a bazillion and twelve nephews to give them to…
