Encouraging Imagination: Indoor Hopscotch Mat

July 2013 029

Last summer Susannah discovered hopscotch and she spent the better part of our week at grandmas scratching out blocks and numbers on the concrete. And if there’s one thing Susannah has plenty of, it’s energy.  Boundless energy.

Since we keep the pool on our patio, and I don’t let the girls out front, there isn’t anywhere for the girl to play her favorite game.

Plus, who wants to sweat in 100+ degree heat, when you can play inside in the air conditioning? 🙂

Solution?  Indoor Hopscotch Mat!
(Idea found here.)

Materials

1 yard canvas or heavy fabric
Felt squares
Glue gun

This puppy was super simple to put together.  Just hem the edges of the fabric and cut numbers out of the felt squares (I used a stencil).  Glue squares down in whatever order you want.  I picked a super simple design so Madeline could learn, too.

We painted a few small rocks to use as markers and we’re all set!

    1. Nice of you to notice. I cut it out the wrong way. They wouldn’t fit when I arranged them vertically. You may notice that I still couldn’t fit a 10…

  1. LOVE this! We used to play this game all summer as kids! Pinned and shared with my daughter who teaches art. She could make one for her class room floor as a something special reward for students! Posted fabric flower refashion to the Sew Can Do party!

  2. that turned out SO cute! I love all the things you can do with felt! I’m trying to think of other games, so I could put something else on the back and make it two sided :o) SO great to burn energy inside. thanks for linking up to nap-timecreations.com Tasteful Tuesday party. You are being featured today in a summer fun round up. I would love for you to come on over and check it out. Feel free to spread the word of the round up on your favorite social media :o) Thanks!
