Felt Typography Ornaments

I used to think I’d be the kind of person who would have a beautiful Christmas tree with perfectly coordinated ornaments.

And then I had kids and realized it was either: a) make the kids happy and let them be involved, which means hanging all kinds of weirdness on the tree or b) have a beautiful tree and sad kids who don’t get to hang their homemade treasures on the tree.

Obviously, if you’ve ever seen our tree, we went with the second option.  And even though I occasionally cringe when I see some of the odd things dangling haphazardly from the tree, it mostly makes me happy to see the (semi) adorable things the girls ooh and aah over.

On the positive side, I don’t have to worry about themes and matching decor whenever the fancy strikes to make ornaments, so I can attempt any number of different ornament types.

I saw some cute felt hearts with hand-stamped labels at a Christmas store in Fredericksburg earlier this year and I knew it wouldn’t be hard to replicate them.

It was a pretty straightforward process – cut some squares of fabric and stamp a word on it (although be sure to let the ink dry before moving on to the next step).

Cut out two identical felt hearts and attach a piece of twine or string to one of them.

Using contrasting thread, sew on the stamped label to the other heart.

Then sew the two hearts together with embroidery floss, stuffing with fiberfill before you stitch the entire thing closed.

Then stick them on your tree and don’t worry about the imperfections, because they’re hardly noticeable in all of garish glory of the tree as a whole.  Awesome.

  1. Now you know why we didn’t care how our tree looked…AND…we didn’t have beautifully coordinated stuff. I LOVE the new ornament. Did you see those adorable lightbulb penguins on Pintrest?

  2. That is such a sweet ornament and I’m glad you let the kids be involved! A true sign of a good mom! I think the mismatched and handmade ornaments have so much more meaning and feeling in then anyway 🙂
