Ribbon Mobile

Remember waaaay back when I was re-doing Susannah’s room (exactly one year ago, now that I think about it) and I made the butterfly mobile to hang over her bed?

Well, for some reason, I just didn’t like it.  She did, for a while, but I think she’s more or less moving out of the butterfly stage, so when I asked if she’d like something different she was okay with the idea.  (Although the butterfly thing is still hanging up in her room for now; turns out she wasn’t quite ready to let it go.)

My inspiration for this came from this site, and since I already had most of the ribbon on hand, the total cost of the project was under $5.

Supply List:

  • Embroidery Hoop (you’ll just need the inside hoop)
  • Ribbon (I used 8-9 spools)
  • Clear thread or fishing line to hang from ceiling
  • Hook for ceiling

I didn’t use any kind of measurements for my ribbon lengths, just cut lengths between 24 to 30 inches.  In retrospect, I wish I had doubled the lengths so I could have just pulled the ribbon through a loop at the top, but they would have been too short so instead I knotted each piece at the top and pushed the short edge under the next ribbon.  (Does that even make sense?)

Continue tying ribbons on until the entire hoop is covered, tie some fishing line around three spots in the hoop and attach with a ceiling hook, and you’ll have this beauty to grace your little princesses room.

We’ve made some changes to the girls rooms recently, so I’ve been shuffling things around, and hope to finish them up this summer. Lame that it’s taken me so long, I know, but hopefully they’ll be complete soon.
I liked the ribbons so much that I used the leftovers to make another mobile to hang outside our back door.  The girls love that our yard is “fancy” now.  😉

Oh, and having learned my lesson the first time around, I did use the easier method of tying the knots on the second attempt.  See?

Much easier!  I love the addition of the pom yarn, too.

  1. Just found you on The Catch a Glimpse party and had to say that this is so simple and pretty!!! I think it could work as a cool party decoration too. Even for a boys party – imagine it hanging from above a super hero party (red, yellow, blue ribbon) or an under the sea party theme – so pretty!
